Fee’s mid-range commentary is a great resource for readers searching for a commentary that highlights the main points of the letter and provides clear application. It’s more accessible than his longer commentary (see below) and better suited for Christians who seek to glean from Fee’s extensive research without the technical details.

The strength of this work lies in its reader friendliness and its pregnant application. I've valued Fee's reading of the letter as a letter of friendship and moral exhortation. The format of the IVP series has its benefits and drawbacks. It makes little to no room for making arguments for exegetical conclusions, and yet it is among the most reader friendly of all commentaries and is geared towards application. I certainly found that to be the case in Fee's commentary. It follows his letter theory well. And even where I questioned his exegetical conclusions and was left wanting more as to how he arrived there, I could never argue with his application and found it quite valuable, even stimulating the heart to moments of worship and reflection.

Fee skillfully distilled his larger commentary down to a size and level that is useful for non-specialists. [Full Review]

Less well known than Fee's NICNT volume. But this brief, non-technical commentary is worth having around. It is by no means comprehensive, but captures the passion and thrust of Philippians well, and frames it beautifully. A good resource to have for sermon prep when time is a factor.
