Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity Press, 2004. Pp. 996. Hardcover. $40.00. ISBN 0830827463. Kevin L. Anderson Asbury College Wilmore, KY 40390 In these beginning years of the twenty-first century a number of fine New Testament introductions have already been published, so it is incumbent upon the scholar to produce a new one that will more adequately target an audience, apply a fresh approach to the subject, or make a unique contribution to the field of study. David deSilva s work does all of these and more. As the subtitle suggests, he not only discusses the New Testament documents within their ancient contexts a s any New Testament introduction should but provides readers with two additional services. First, to a degree hitherto unparalleled, deSilva introduces the dizzyingly vast array of exegetical methods. Second, he appropriates the pastoral strategies of each New Testament author to the ministry and discipleship needs of contemporary life. This feature sets deSilva s work apart, for it meets a crucial need in its target audience. Many students seeking a degree in theology are engaged in studying the New Testament as a part of preparation for ministry. Remarkably, no one until deSilva has thought of merging first-rate critical scholarship with pastoral sensitivity, thus bringing New Testament studies within an ecclesial orbit and happily situating them among all things divinity. The plan for deSilva s work involves explor ing the New Testament through the course of twenty-four chapters.
