With their messages of doom and judgment, the Minor Prophets have not been popular subjects in the history of biblical interpretation. In this exegetical and expository commentary, noted scholars remedy this neglect by offering an authoritative, evangelical treatment on the prophets. This volume, the first of three, features commentary by Thomas McComiskey (Hosea), Raymond Dillard (Joel), and Jeffrey Niehaus (Amos). The authors not only provide meticulous exegesis of the Hebrew text but also relate the message of the ancient prophets to contemporary life in practical and meaningful ways.

This remains my first choice if I could own only one commentary set on the Minor Prophets. Its unusual format combines detailed Hebrew exegesis with a separate exposition of the theological meaning of the text, and the individual contributors generally bring genuine specialist expertise to their books. The quality inevitably varies somewhat across twelve prophets and multiple authors, and later specialist volumes have surpassed individual sections, but remarkably little of the set feels dispensable. It is technical without becoming inaccessible, conservative without avoiding difficult critical questions, and consistently useful for moving from the Hebrew text to interpretation. An exceptionally valuable reference work for serious study of the Twelve.

I have been preaching through The Twelve and this commentary has been incredibly helpful. Of course, some books are better than others, but overall this commentary was well worth the investment.
