Reviews
Carson’s Matthew remains remarkably useful despite its age and comparatively compressed format. His great strength is exegetical economy: difficult passages are treated with enough technical detail to identify the major alternatives, followed by clear and usually well-argued judgments that are readily usable by scholar, pastor and theological student alike. He is particularly strong on the Sermon on the Mount, law and fulfillment, kingdom theology, Peter, Israel and the nations, and the Great Commission. Carson also wisely resists elaborate reconstructions of a hypothetical Matthean community where the evidence cannot sustain them. It is less comprehensive than Davies–Allison and less distinctive in social background than Keener, but few commentaries offer so much exegetical and theological value per page.
A staple in college and seminary libraries and in pastors’ studies worldwide, Carson’s volume marshals the most current evangelical scholarship. His commentary features detailed outlines, insightful expositions of passages, and overviews that illuminate the big picture. Carson masterfully balances details and readability.
