This is much more important than its title as a translators’ handbook might initially suggest. Ogden and Zogbo combine exceptionally careful attention to Hebrew wording, discourse, alternative translations, and exegetical possibilities with a distinctive and surprisingly coherent interpretation of the book. Especially valuable is the treatment of yitron as “lasting benefit”: Qohelet discovers that such enduring gain cannot be secured through ordinary human achievement, while the recurring calls to eat, drink, work, and enjoy the life God gives function as climactic constructive advice rather than reluctant concessions to despair. Their treatment of hebel likewise stresses mystery, frustration, and what cannot finally be mastered rather than simply “meaninglessness.” Because every interpretive conclusion must ultimately be translated into another language, the commentary is refreshingly concrete and text-focused. Its scope is narrower than a full critical or theological commentary, but precisely as a lexical, exegetical, and discourse-level companion it is extraordinarily useful and deserves much wider recognition.
