John 1–4

McHugh deserves an unusual qualification. The commentary that exists is of 5/5 quality: exceptionally close textual work, careful resistance to speculative reconstructions and genuinely fresh structural interpretation, including his treatment of John 2–4 under the rubric of a “New Jerusalem.” The tragedy is that McHugh died before completing the work beyond John 4. But for John 1–4 specifically I would rank it among the strongest resources available.
