Hebrews

Moo provides arguably the best large, conventional exegetical commentary on Hebrews for contemporary pastors, students, and scholars. He is meticulous without becoming cumbersome, cautious where the evidence is uncertain, and particularly effective at synthesizing linguistic, historical, literary, and theological issues into clear judgments. His reluctance to build the interpretation around speculative conclusions regarding authorship, audience, or destination is welcome, as is his integration of Hebrews’ horizontal salvation-historical movement with its vertical heaven-earth dimension. Moo is consistently strong on the use of the Old Testament, the once-for-all character of Christ’s sacrifice, pilgrimage and perseverance, and the difficult warning passages, even where his final theological resolution of Hebrews 6 will not persuade everyone. His greatest strength is not radical novelty but extraordinarily reliable judgment combined with engagement with the full range of recent scholarship. If I wanted one substantial modern exegetical commentary that could be used confidently across the whole book, Moo would be among my first choices.

I’m a lay preacher, and this commentary has helped me in sermon preparation. It is especially useful for grasping the big picture of Hebrews. It’s not too scholarly, but I think it is a valuable resource for every preacher who needs help in analyzing the context and the overall message of Hebrews.
