This theological reading of Numbers is helpful in many ways. Stubbs does not interact with the text in detail but he brings out the significance of the stories and laws well. He is very insightful most of the time, though occasionally he gets tied up with questions like “don’t we know better than this in light of the New Testament?” The volumes in the Brazos series should never be the primary reference, since they do not analyze the text closely at all, but they are great at adding depth to our reflections.
While this commentary goes into a fair amount of depth and has extensive footnotes, it is geared toward guiding pastors. It’s especially helpful for understanding Numbers in relation to the rest of the Christian Bible. [Full Review]
