Reviews
This is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the Bible through quality commentaries! 📖 I appreciate how the review breaks down each book’s strengths—highlighting clarity, scholarly depth, and spiritual insight. It’s especially helpful that you cover a range of preferences: from academic to pastoral to devotional—making it easy to find the right fit.
As someone developing an educational platform at https://holyquranclasses.com, I deeply value the importance of context and authenticity in religious studies. Reviews like this help readers connect with commentaries that resonate on both intellectual and spiritual levels.
One suggestion: a quick “recommended next step” section could be useful—for example, pairing commentaries with online study groups, recommended reading order, or corresponding Bible reading plans. That would help readers take action straight away.
Thank you for providing such a clear, well-structured guide—it’s a great tool for anyone wanting to enrich their Bible study journey. Well done!

As others have stated, despite being in a multi-book volume, VanGermeren's Psalms commentary could have very well been a standalone at nearly 900 pages. I find it extremely helpful as someone who likes to do in depth studies and teaches Sunday school. Paired with Spurgeon's "Treasury of David" set, I feel well covered in my studies of The Psalms!
Solid but unexciting.
Widely viewed as the best mid-level commentary on Psalms. Mathison writes, “For each psalm, VanGemeren provides a substantive introduction followed by expository comments and textual notes on every verse. In many cases, these comments are then followed by an appendix dealing more fully with some important issue in that particular psalm.”

This commentary is streamlined and accessible, but written with the serious student or pastor in mind. Its introduction and topical essays scattered throughout (but helpfully listed in the introduction) are alone worth the price of the commentary.

This commentary is one of the stronger volumes in the REBC series. Thankfully, the editors of the series gave VanGemeren his own volume to work through the Psalter because he does a magnificent job. This conservative commentary is detailed, but not verbose.

VanGemeren’s commentary is volume 5 in the WBC. The experts consider it something of a hidden treasure (perhaps because in a previous version it was bound with a couple of other books of the Bible). Tremper Longman awards it 5 stars and says it is “excellent on the text and the text’s theology and is particularly helpful in sermon preparation.”
