The shortest commentary on the list (under 250 pages), but there is still a lot of great material here. Thielman is a well-respected New Testament scholar and someone I really enjoy reading (his Ephesians commentary is one of the best). The NIVAC presents itself as focusing on identifying the main points and examining the original context, but also bringing the meaning into the present. Some volumes succeed, others come up short. This one is certainly not one of the high points in the series. It is still a useful resource, but offers very little which can't be found elsewhere. It's a tad dry, and the introduction gives precious little detail on contextual considerations.

I do not have this commentary but I remember using it a couple times when I was studying Philippians in depth. Every time I used it I remember wishing I did own it. Though I am not usually a fan of the commentaries I have used in this series, this one was excellent both in interpretation and application. Thielman has a great way of making the text understandable and putting it in practical terms. Recommended for both the student, pastor, and devotional reader.
