Boda’s NIVAC volume is much more substantial than the series label might suggest. He consistently integrates historical setting, literary structure and theological interpretation, with especially valuable attention to the central role of Zechariah 7–8 and to the reuse of earlier Scripture in Zechariah 9–14. The application sections are generally rooted in the preceding exegesis rather than appended artificially, making the commentary unusually useful for moving from ancient text to contemporary Christian proclamation. Boda’s later NICOT Zechariah is now the more important technical work, so there is inevitably some overlap and this volume is no longer his first stop for detailed Zechariah exegesis. Nevertheless, as an exegetical-theological commentary it remains exceptional.

As others point out, the commentary is more scholarly than many in this series. It is lots more readable than Meyers'. There were many alternative interpretations explored in this book that I appreciated even if I did not agree. But on a whole I was left a bit dry – both exegitically and devotionally. The serious student will probably still want Meyers first but this may be good to consult for alternative interpretations in places. Devotionally I found Craigie and Phillips of more help.
