A well-written academic commentary that, says Mathison, “is so well written that one can easily read it straight through,” and not merely consult it as a reference work. It provides a particularly rich treatment of the letter’s social and historical background with strong biblical-theological reflections; the author takes pains to tie together various theological themes from the Pauline corpus. A good option, but not without a few flaws. Some stuff which could be moved to the footnotes is part of the main body. I'm not sold on his exegesis of 2 Cor. 5:14ff. But overall a worthy addition to a great series.

Barnett’s work is considered by most experts to be the best or one of the best. [Full Review]
Paul Barnett's commentary on 2 Corinthians is one of those commentaries that is so well written that one can easily read it straight through - rather than treating it as a reference work and consulting whatever section one is researching. It is very readable and accessible. One of the major strengths of the commentary is the fact that Barnett deals not only with the basic exegetical issues but also discusses the theology of the letter. In other words, he doesn't lose sight of the forest for the trees. Very highly recommended. [Full Review]
