Reviews
I’ve really enjoyed diving into all of Evans’ reviews, and generally find them sure footed for the pastor. However, is it just me, or does any one else find it a strange that EVERY Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the OT is “suggested for purchase” and this book is published by ZONDERVAN? How can every volume in this series be one of the best? It doesn’t make sense! He call them a “personal favorite,” and many are wonderful, no doubt! But would anyone put ALL OF THEM at the top? Maybe they are, but I’m not so sure.
This is a very full survey of the available commentaries that includes other books dealing with the various Bible texts. Evans is up front with his theological preferences and keeps the needs of pastors in mind. (More than once he finds certain commentaries impressive as scholarship but not actually useful to pastors, either because they are too large and detailed or because they are entirely focused on academic issues.) Despite a conservative stance Evans appreciates and recommends books from non-conservative scholars. Covers books up to 2024, but occasionally will say “I have not used this enough to evaluate.” The most current print guide available.
