Habakkuk

Turner’s volume is one of the finest recent evangelical commentaries on Habakkuk. He combines detailed analysis of the Hebrew text, poetic lineation and discourse structure with substantial biblical theology and consistently useful guidance for teaching and preaching. Particularly noteworthy is his fresh argument that, although God raises up Babylon, Habakkuk does not explicitly describe its invasion as punishment for Judah’s sins; the absence of a stated justification for using such a ruthless nation is part of what makes the prophet’s perplexity so acute. Whether or not readers are persuaded by every aspect of this proposal, Turner argues it carefully and allows Habakkuk to speak in his own distinctive voice rather than simply importing the theology of Jeremiah or other prophets. His treatment of Habakkuk’s movement from complaint and confusion to waiting, perseverance and joyful confidence is especially strong, as is his exposition of the book’s sophisticated poetry and Divine Warrior imagery. The ZECOT format can occasionally feel busy, but the volume successfully integrates technical exegesis, theological interpretation and practical application. An original, substantial and highly useful commentary that deserves to be ranked among the best treatments of Habakkuk.
