Schreiner offers a thoughtful and engaging theological reading of Acts whose strength lies in synthesis rather than groundbreaking exegesis. He consistently interprets Acts as the continuing work of the risen and ascended Christ, integrating canonical, Trinitarian and ecclesial themes into a coherent vision that is particularly valuable for preaching and biblical theology. His attention to Acts’ place within the canon, his retrieval of patristic and Reformation interpreters, and his ability to weave together themes from across Scripture produce many fresh and memorable insights. At times, however, his figural readings move beyond connections clearly signalled by Luke and treat broader canonical patterns as though they were the author’s intended meaning, allowing the theological framework to govern the interpretation more strongly than the text itself warrants. Many of Schreiner’s central theological emphases build fruitfully on insights already developed by commentators such as Luke Timothy Johnson, Dennis Johnson, Peterson, Calvin and Keener, but he brings them together with unusual clarity and consistency. The volume is therefore best used not as a replacement for a fuller technical commentary, but as a highly valuable theological companion that helps readers see the larger canonical and ecclesial significance of Acts.
