Kruse offers the best overall balance of originality, exegetical reliability, scholarly breadth, and usefulness among the commentaries I have examined on the Johannine Epistles. The extensively revised second edition incorporates two decades of additional scholarship while retaining the commentary’s admirable clarity and restraint. Kruse is particularly good at disputed passages, carefully weighing competing interpretations without allowing speculative reconstructions of the Johannine community or its opponents to control the exegesis. His discussions of sin and new birth, the Spirit, assurance, atonement, the “sin leading to death,” and the background to 2 and 3 John repeatedly display independent judgment while remaining closely tethered to the text. The numerous excursuses are genuinely useful rather than digressive. Kruse may not always offer the most novel interpretation, but few commentators so consistently distinguish what the text actually supports from what is merely possible. If I could choose only one commentary on 1–3 John, this would be it.

Veteran Paul and John scholar, Colin Kruse (emeritus professor of Melbourne School of Theology), offers a welcomed update to his original 2000 publication. In sum, this is an exegetically solid commentary, conscious too of theological themes, and will benefit preachers and students alike.
