Templum Amicitiae: Essays on the Second Temple Presented to Ernst Bammel

Jewish and Christian perceptions of the Second Temple in Jerusalem are explored here in twenty essays. The main subjects are Jewish public opinion before and after Herod's new building, the temple in Christian origins and the New Testament, and views of the Jewish cultus in the early church. Foci of discussion include the temple in connection with kingship and messianism, positive and negative attitudes to the temple, and Jewish and Christian use of temple imagery. The book was presented by pupils, friends and colleagues to Ernst Bammel, Reader in Jewish and Early Christian Studies in the University of Cambridge. His rich bibliography (1945-91) is printed in conclusion.
