Barker offers one of the strongest recent commentaries on Joel, combining discourse analysis, careful attention to structure, Hebrew exegesis and biblical theology. Particularly effective is his treatment of the movement from judgment to restoration and the role of the call to return to Yahweh as a structural and theological hinge. He also handles Joel’s place within the Twelve and its broader canonical connections without allowing those questions to eclipse the individual book. There are inevitably points at which his evangelical theological synthesis goes further than what can be established from Joel alone, but the overall argument remains disciplined. For a single contemporary evangelical commentary on Joel, this is one of my first choices.
