Originally presented as the author's thesis, Claremont Graduate School, 1974. After Canaan's settlement the Ark remained a season in the Gilgal tabernacle. Then it was removed to Shiloh until the time of Eli, 3-400 years (Jer 7:12), when it was carried into battle to secure, they supposed, Hebrew victory. It was taken by the Philistines (1Sam 4:3-11), who sent it back after retaining it seven months (1Sam 5:7f) because of events which transpired. After their 1st defeat at Ebenezer, the Israelites had it brought from Shiloh, welcoming it joyously.
