Alan Thompson’s EGGNT volume is an exceptionally useful companion for anyone working through Luke in Greek. It proceeds phrase by phrase through the text, discussing vocabulary, syntax, textual variants and competing grammatical interpretations while clearly indicating Thompson’s preferred conclusions, and supplements this with structural analysis, further-study bibliographies and homiletical suggestions. It does not attempt the historical, literary or theological comprehensiveness of a full commentary, and consequently should not be judged as though it were competing with Nolland or Bock. Within its intended task, however, it is superb: it often allows the reader to identify the real grammatical issue in a verse within minutes and then directs them toward the major discussions.
