Product Description

An outstanding resource for discovering the deeper theological and ethical relevance of Paul's letter. Verhey and Harvard's passage-by-passage commentary discusses the interpretation of God's Word as scripted; demonstrates ways in which the letter models pastoral, ecclesial, evangelical, eschatological, Christological, prayerful, doxological, and boundary-breaking ethics; and draws parallels between the Ephesian community and the contemporary church. 312 pages, hardcover from Westminster John Knox.

Publisher's Description

Praise for the Series

"While there are many commentary series on our shelves, the new commentary Belief is of special moment. The volumes draw upon the rich theological traditions of the past and attend to the continuing theological issues and perplexities of the present." —Patrick D. Miller, Charles T. Haley Professor of Old Testament Theology Emeritus, Princeton Theological Seminary

"This welcome series holds great promise for a new engagement between biblical texts and constructive theology. Readers can anticipate a great deal that may be both fresh and faithful." —Walter Brueggemann, William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament Emeritus, Columbia Theological Seminary

"For anyone who wants to think about what the Bible has to say to theological discussions today, the voices within this series will be as arresting and provocative as the variety of voices within the Bible itself." —David H. Kelsey, Luther A. Weigle Professor of Theology Emeritus, Yale University Divinity School

The volumes in Belief: A Theological Commentary on the Bible from Westminster John Knox Press offer a fresh and invigorating approach to all the books of the Bible. Building on a wide range of sources from biblical studies and the Christian tradition, noted scholars focus less on traditional historical and literary angles in favor of a theologically focused commentary that considers the contemporary relevance of the texts. This series is an invaluable resource for those who want to probe beyond the backgrounds and words of biblical texts to their deep theological meanings for the church today.

Long recognized as a significant theological document and one from which the Christian church gains life and direction, the book of Ephesians focuses on Jesus Christ’s amazing work in redemption and reconciliation. It invites—and requires—our participation in it. Jointly written by a theological seminary professor and an active pastor, this commentary emerges from an adult Sunday school class on Ephesians they taught together, as well as their own studies and experiences. The result is a fascinating work that focuses on the gospel of Jesus Christ and the ways it is to be lived out in the church and by Christians in their own lives.
