I used this text in a LXX seminar along with Tov's Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible. The book is written in lucid and direct prose--though the concepts described are naturally complex. Throughout the book, Tov provides citations for further reading and so makes a great starting-point when beginning a research project (anyhow, it was for me).

It should be noted that this text is primarily focused on the use of the LXX in textual criticism, it is not an introduction to the LXX or to TC generally. Because of this, when used in the classroom it should be supplemented with another text such as Jellicoe's Septuagint and Modern Study (and Swete's Introduction, which is now out of copyright and freely available online). I've used neither Moisés Silva and Karen H. Jobes' Invitation to the Septuagint, nor Natalio Fernández Marcos' The Septuagint in Context: Introduction to the Greek Version of the Bible.

As I'm writing this, is seems that Amazon doesn't have this in stock--I had to get my copy from Eisenbrauns.

See book reviews in various academic journals for professional summaries and evaluations. Enough has changed in the 2nd edition that we probably want to use that now. (I am still awaiting a copy via Interlibrary Loan to compare them myself.) However, enough remains the same that reviews of the 1st ed. still provide valuable synopses of Tov's contributions and arguments.

See also Tov's _Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible_ (1992), which led him to revise his thinking on some points relative to the 1st ed. of this handbook.
