Great Commentary, very contextual
5 out of 5 stars
Great Commentary, very contextual
With both the best scholarship (you can see this in the bibliography), and with seminary teachers as the core writing group, The Africa Bible Commentary exceeds one's expectations. I checked out the commentaries on Genesis, Proverbs, and Jeremiah. Word Biblical Commentary series were often used - very good. Did not use any of the Comentario Biblico Mundo Hispano as it is in Spanish and most of Africa is English or French-oriented. One nation is Spanish. The three books that I examined were well done. The accompanying articles address specific issues within the African context such as Tribalism, Ethnicity, and Race, The Bible & Polygamy, The Role of the Ancestors, etc. Also more international areas such as the Bible, and Principles of Interpretation were treated. One errata: the article of Street Children is located on page 1266 (not 2366). This is a commentary that should be on the shelf of every pastor and missionary on the African continent as well as those who minister with Africans in their diaspora.

The Africa Bible Commentary is an exceptional resource that brings a fresh and culturally relevant perspective to the study of the Bible. Written by 70 African scholars, this commentary is deeply rooted in the realities, challenges, and rich traditions of the African continent, offering insights that are both biblically sound and contextually meaningful.

What sets this commentary apart is the way it connects Scripture to real-life issues faced by African communities. Whether it's addressing social justice, poverty, or family dynamics, the contributors skillfully interpret biblical truths in ways that resonate with African cultures while remaining faithful to the text.

The commentary is comprehensive yet accessible, making it a valuable tool for pastors, students, and everyday readers alike. The clear explanations, practical applications, and culturally relevant illustrations make the Bible come alive in a way that’s relatable and impactful for African audiences and beyond.

If you’re looking for a deeper understanding of the Bible from a uniquely African perspective, this book is a must-have. It’s a powerful reminder that God’s Word speaks to all cultures and communities. Highly recommended!

@chieflady, I am also replying to you. You were having trouble finding links in the Kindle version to find commentary on specific passages without paging through and asked for input. If you select any book of the Bible from the Contents page at the top, each book begins with about 2 pages of general comments on the book. THIS IS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY A BOOK-SPECIFIC TABLE OF CONTENTS - WITH LINKS TO SEQUENTIAL PASSAGES FROM THAT BOOK WITH THE TOPIC HEADINGS LABELED FOR EACH. Clicking on a link takes you directly to the commentary on that passage.

I find this commentary extremely well written and accessible in the areas that I have used it so far. It is exciting to see a solid commentary (recognizing and committed to the authority of Scripture as infallible) written in English from a cultural perspective other than American or European. Everyone comes to the Scriptures with a cultural lens, with perspectives and worldviews affected by our fallible cultural worldviews, and yet every culture has redeeming qualities placed there by our created.

Obviously the cultures of Africa are much broader than one overall culture, but the shared characteristics that affect a general African worldview vs. a general Western European & American worldview are significantly different. Africans also generally do not bring the same tendency as is more prevalent among Westerners to overlook the discrepancies between our own extrabiblical cultural worldviews and the worldview of the Scriptures themselves and of the cultural groups to whom they were originally written.

I find a refreshing focus on the clear meaning of Scripture and applications that may sometimes appear outside the box for Westerners yet remain consistently inside the box for the Scriptures themselves, causing a reconsideration of the text of Scripture in a healthy way while still celebrating the authority of Scripture over that of culture and the Scriptures' overarching applicability directly to all cultures.

I hope this will be a beginning point for more -- both from Africa and from other areas of the world who can bring additional cultural insights to bear on the Scriptures while countering the centuries-long tendency to see commentaries examining the Scriptures primarily (nearly exclusively?) through a Western cultural filter.

    Extremely helpful and well done.

My library is filled with commentaries. However, it is refreshing to gain insight from an African perspective. This commentary shares how the African culture understands the Word of God by adding anecdotes. This commentary does not dilute the scriptural meaning but, in some ways, enhances it.

It is helpful to have perspective away from the northern hemisphere. This one volume gives me a view into the Africian culture of which I have a bit of experience. The brevity does not cripple the insight from the variety of authors. I like the constant reminder of the communal aspect of the ancient near east along with recognition of the rich heritage we have from previous generations. This is a welcome change to other commentaries with the words studied through the centuries.

This is what I would call a pastoral commentary. It is not particularly devotional neither is it analytical. The references to "what the original means" are few and far between (if any). It feels more like a series of brief sermons on each of the passages but does give a fresh look at many well known scriptures

I got this book for my wife who has church links in Malawi. We felt that it was important to understand the theology of the African people as it is slightly different to ours in the UK - our cultures are different. A very good book for getting into the African mind.
