- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2015This commentary complements my pastor's sermons and provides a robust explanation of Paul's context and messages that a regular church-goer like me can understand.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2014Simon Kistemaker has performed a great service to New Testament scholarship by completing the task begun a number of years ago by the late William Hendriksen. The commentary on 1 Corinthians is one of the New Testament Commentary set written by Kistemaker. He adopts the same format as is found in the commentaries written by Hendriksen, one that separates the more technical matters from the main commentary text. For example, references to the Greek text are found either in footnotes or notes at the end of each section. Thus, the layperson can read the commentary on a particular passage without having to wade through or skip over material that would not be relevant. At the same time, the scholar can read the notes to gain a better understanding of textual issues and the like.
Although Kistemaker writes from a conservative Reformed position, he is fair to other interpretations of controversial texts. His discussion of chapters 12-14 (on tongues and other spiritual gifts), in my opinion, is especially well balanced. This is characteristic of his approach in general.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2002I found this to be the best of the commentary set recently released. My favorite book of the Bible is 1 Corinthians, so my opinion is highly biased. Still, after getting the full set, the first I went through is 1 Corinthians. It is good and up-to-date. There are many details filled in from a Reformed perspective. In some areas he disagrees with Hendrickson, but in a slight way (similar to how Supreme Court rulings disagree with previous Supreme Court rulings without contradicting them). This incorporates many of the investigations into Scripture of the past 30 years or so. Get the full set. If you cannot get the full set, get this volume.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2015Runs from teaching that Paul in 1 Cor. commands us today that women should have long hair, be silent in church, and that men are commanded to go after speaking up in the church service. A plain bible believing reading of 1 Cor. 12-14 shows that today's church services don't follow God's instructions of how God wants a church service to be conducted. How have we arrived at the place were the modern church service today is accepted as biblical? I think Martin Luther's words give the answer. " I have observed that all the heresies and errors have arisen not from Scripture's own plain statements, but when that plainness of statement is ignored, and men follow the Scholastic arguments of their own brains" . It's hard for pastors etc to see what might cost them having the big spot light, a larger church and salary. PowerOfGrace.org
