From Good News to Gospels: What Did the First Christians Say about Jesus? Paperback – May 17, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
The good news of Jesus spread like wildfire through the Roman Empire in the decades between his death and the writing of the first gospels—but how? What exactly did the first Christians say about Jesus? In From Good News to Gospels David Wenham delves into the gospels, the book of Acts, and the writings of Paul to uncover evidence of a strong and substantial oral tradition in the early church. This book will inform, engage, and challenge readers, inspiring them to better understand and appreciate the earliest gospel message.

Editorial Reviews
Review
— Denver Seminary
“The role of oral tradition as the key component behind the formation of the Gospels, even where literary dependence exists, is making a comeback in Gospel scholarship. It hasn’t yet replaced the reigning paradigms of redaction and literary criticism, but if it does, David Wenham’s works over the years will have had a lot to do with it. This short, straightforward little book masks years of research and a breadth of learning. . . . A delight to read and recommend.”
John Nolland
— Trinity College Bristol
“I have long suspected that the very small role allowed for oral tradition in most Gospel scholarship is, at least in part, a failure of imagination and a refusal to allow into the picture what cannot be readily manipulated by well-honed academic procedures. David Wenham makes a powerful case for glimpsing major traces of oral sources at many points in our existing documents. Our imaginative powers need to catch up, and our academic procedures need to become more flexible!”
Craig A. Evans
— Houston Baptist University
“Wenham has been writing good books on major New Testament topics for thirty years. From Good News to Gospels is another one, and it is one of his best. Contrary to some scholars, Wenham rightly underscores the continuity between the preaching and ministry of Jesus and the story of his life, death, and resurrection given us by the evangelists. This book is instructive, well written, and full of insight.”

- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2020David Wenham brings clarity, common sense, and sharp insight to Gospel studies. He makes the case for re-estimating the impact and dynamics of the oral culture of the world in which the written Gospels came to be. This small book is quickly read, but it has in notes and bibliography all the references to the scholarship behind the presentation. At the heart of the book is the strikingly commonsense idea that if you are preaching a crucified Messiah, you really need to say more and people will have to know more...basically the whole Gospel story is likely in play. Wenham studies the evidence that suggests this was the case. He covers other approaches as well, so that the reader gets a sense of the leading controversies in the field. This is a book for every intelligent believer...and even the most advanced scholars who have given too little attention to the likely dynamics of oral traditions in the first century. And this is scholarship that is a delight to read. Most highly recommended, particularly for all college students interested in Christianity and Biblical studies.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2018David Wenham has given another carefully crafted volume to the New Testament community and beyond. The book examines the interesting, but unfortunately ignored world of oral tradition. Wenham is specifically interested in the time between the writing of the New Testament documents and the historical events which they record. He argues that the content which was circulating orally is accessible through the window of the New Testament writings. These writings give insights into the gospel message immediately following the Resurrection. Drawing from his previous work on the historical Jesus in context and the relationship between Jesus and Paul, Wenham provides a helpful work for understanding the world before the New Testament texts and the message of the first Christians.

5.0 out of 5 stars David Wenham's defence of an oral tradition for the Gospels
Scholarly appraisal for the strong case for an oral tradition know also to Paul as he had sought it out. No need for all the so called sources Q, L, M etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing new approach
... in contrast to centuries of speculation about other written sources that downgraded the narrative of the 4 gospel writers
