The Kingdom of God and the Glory of the Cross (Short Studies in Biblical Theology) Paperback – March 31, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” ―Matthew 13:31–32
When Jesus began his ministry, he announced that the kingdom of God was at hand. But many modern-day Christians don’t really understand what the kingdom of God is or how it relates to the message of the gospel.
Defining kingdom as the King’s power over the King’s people in the King’s place, Patrick Schreiner investigates the key events, prophecies, and passages of Scripture that highlight the important theme of kingdom across the storyline of the Bible―helping readers see how the mission of Jesus and the coming of the kingdom fit together.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“The kingdom of God is central to the biblical storyline and should become central in our theology. A clear, faithful, and solid portrayal of the kingdom, this volume helps us both understand the biblical teaching on the kingdom and view the Bible through the vantage point of the kingdom of God.”
―Christopher W. Morgan, Dean, School of Christian Ministries, California Baptist University; Pastor, Immanuel Baptist Church, Highland, California
“Patrick Schreiner’s biblical theology of the kingdom of God is exactly what the church needs to help her pursue God’s justice on earth: a lucid, precise, and concise book about the kingdom of God that’s grounded in accessible biblical exegesis and provides keen theological insights, while keeping the cross of Jesus at the center of the analysis. Highly recommended!”
―Jarvis J. Williams, Professor of New Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
“Patrick Schreiner has given a wonderful gift to the church through this book on the kingdom of God. It’s a creatively written and accessible entryway into this essential biblical theme. Schreiner honors the unified narrative shape of the Old and New Testaments, and he shows how every part of the Bible (including the Wisdom Literature!) contributes to the developing portrait of God’s kingdom over creation and new creation. If you’ve ever struggled to understand this complex biblical theme or tried to communicate it to others, you’ve now found the place to start.”
―Tim Mackie, Cofounder, The Bible Project; Adjunct Professor of Biblical Literature, Western Seminary
“To say that the story of the Bible is the story of the King and his kingdom is one thing; to see it clearly and concisely demonstrated from every part of the Bible is another. I look forward to recommending this book to those who love and appreciate biblical theology as well as those who love Christ and the Bible but haven’t yet understood how to see King Jesus throughout its entire story.”
―Nancy Guthrie, author; Bible teacher
“Patrick Schreiner beautifully traces the theme of God’s kingdom through the entire Bible. The threads of his kingdom can be seen from Adam to Abraham, through Psalms and Isaiah, to Jesus and his church, and finally to the new heaven and the new earth, where Christ will reign with his people in his place. Schreiner skillfully shows us the inseparability of God’s kingdom, the cross of Jesus, and the gospel message. I highly recommend this interesting and encouraging book!”
―Randy Alcorn, author, Heaven; If God Is Good; and The Treasure Principle

- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019Why did Jesus speak so often of the Kingdom, while we in the church hardly ever preach it? What if the Kingdom motif was not just central to the story-line of Old Testament Scripture, but also to the entire New Testament? Is the Kingdom of God primarily the rule of God? Patrick Schreiner, son of scholar Tom Schreiner, answers these questions on the Kingdom in this short but engaging book. He contends that most definitions of the term restrict it primarily to the “rule of God”. He defines the Kingdom as “the King’s power over the King’s people in the King’s place”. Such a definition, he argues, is an antidote to the reductionist definitions of the Kingdom which focus primarily on power or rule. Indeed, through the book, he makes the Biblical case that there can be no Kingdom without a King reigning in power, no Kingdom without Kingdom people and no Kingdom without a place!
Schreiner first runs through the Old Testament and then through the New Testament to show us how the Kingdom narrative is central through the Scriptures. According to Schreiner, the Law revives hope in the Kingdom. The Prophets foreshadow the Kingdom. The Writings portray life in the Kingdom. The Gospels embody the Kingdom. The Acts and Epistles display the community of the Kingdom. Revelation achieves the goal of the Kingdom. Schreiner also compares the Kingdom to a tree. The tree (the Cross) is what brings the Kingdom forth. The Cross and the Kingdom cannot be disengaged. He writes, "The two realities are forever joined; separating them is an act of violence. If the Kingdom is the goal, then the Cross is the means."
Here are few things I appreciated about this short, handy and engaging book: First, I really appreciated Schreiner’s perspective on the tangible nature of the Kingdom. The Kingdom is not just eternal, but very earthy! Second, Schreiner handsomely links the significance of the Kingdom to the pinnacle of the Cross. It is by the Cross that the Kingdom comes. Third, though Schreiner is a scholar and professor, he has written an accessible book for the church. The book is short enough to be read in a day, but engaging enough to spark the interest of a new reader to Biblical theology.
The Kingdom theme doesn’t appear on every page of Scripture, but Schreiner succeeds in demonstrating that the concept is central to the story-line of Scripture. This is a winsome entry level resource to one of Scripture’s most pervasive themes and I am happy to commend it to you.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2020I bought this book as a single-volume introduction to a biblical theology of the kingdom of God, as I begin work on my doctoral thesis. This book was just excellent for that purpose.
To begin with, the book begins with a simple articulation of what the kingdom of God is: the king's power over the king's people in the king's place. Obviously, there is much more to say, but with this in mind, the author proceeds to examine these themes as they relate to the kingdom beginning with the canonical sections of the Old Testament (Law, Prophets, Writings) and moving on to the canonical sections of the New Testament (Gospels, Epistles, Revelation). They land on the conclusion that the kingdom of God is brought about precisely through the death of Jesus: that the kingdom comes through the cross.
My only complaint is minor: the authors use the analogy of a tree as a framing device in many sections. This sometimes led my thinking down rabbit trails that I had to close off in order to focus on the material to hand. I consider that a very minor issue in the context of an excellent introduction.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2025good succinct coverage of this important topic. Using it in bible study to encapsulate understanding of the kingdom of god
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019I can relate with the author. A through discussion of the Kingdom is missing in alot of Christian education. This book is a solutionn. Patrick Schreinder gives us a brief but full explanation of what the Kingdom of God is and how it is manifested throughout Scripture. He uses the Hebrew organization of the OT to show how the Kingdom originated, how it was lost and restored, how to live, and it's foreshadowing in the prophets. In the NT he shows it's breaking through in the Gospels, it's proclamation in the Acts and the Epistles, and its culmination in the book of Revelation. I will never look at the wisdom literature band the book of James the same way again. God is moving by His power and building His people in His place. I heartily recommend this book to all.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2024Good read. Not as good as Thomas Schreiner’s larger work, who is Patrick Schreiner’s dad.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2018Patrick shows how the kingdom of God isn't just in the Gospels, or even just the New Testament. HIs book gives us an overview of the Kingdom and its focal point on the Cross. If you have not done much in biblical theology it is a great book to start on, but if you have, it still gives you plenty to chew on and makes you look at passages you already knew in a new light.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2018I enjoyed this book and got a lot of good new thoughts and insights. I didn't agree with every point and felt he stretched a little in a few places but not to the point of error or violence to the Word. Good overall and helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2019Patrick has taken a difficult and often misunderstood (yet central!) concept of the Bible and made it plain for us. What a gift! Never will the idea of the kingdom of God, nor how big of a deal it is be clearer to you that after you read this book. What a gift!

A short and sweet study about the Kingdom. I really enjoyed that the author considers and explains the symbols from the OT, and expands the meaning trough the lens of the NT.
