The modern church is much like ancient Israel. The old covenant people wanted to be delivered from their bondage in Egypt, but they did not want to follow Moses into the Promised Land. They just marked time wandering in the wilderness. In like manner many Christians are happy that they have been saved from the judgment of hell, but they refuse to trust God for the abundant life in their daily experience. They simply survive in their immaturity, carnality, and mediocrity. In the book of Hebrews, the author exhorts his readers to advance into the full blessings of the new covenant. He wants them to enjoy the total ministry of Jesus Christ in this life. He warns them about the dire consequences of rejecting the provision and leadership of the Savior.
“The key word of the book is ‘better.’ The word is used thirteen times to show the superiority of the believer’s position in Christ (1:4; 6:9; 7:7, 19, 22; 8:6 [twice]; 9:23; 10:34; 11:16, 35, 40). In Christ the believer has better promises and a better hope, covenant, substance, country, and resurrection.” (Page 19)
“received divine appointment to the office of High Priest” (Page 92)
“The prophets spoke the word of God, but Christ is the word of God” (Page 24)
“It must be approached from the same exegetical perspective found in all of the exhortations and warnings scattered throughout the epistle.” (Page 173)
“First, his parents showed their faith in God by hiding their newborn for three months (11:23; Exod. 2:2; Acts 7:20)” (Page 190)
