This brief study is intended primarily for theological students, and perhaps also for ministers who wish to update their scholarship. It seeks to show the issues facing those who seek to study Ephesians or interpret it. The first part examines in detail the normal questions of authorship and destination. The second offers a brief survey of the content of the letter drawing out its main points. The third part concentrates attention on its theology, treating in detail its teaching about the church and behaviour. In this it is claimed that these two areas of life together in the Christian community and conduct within it reflect on one another and influence each other; in that sense the letter is a unity of thought. While an attempt is made to solve the problems which present themselves, for example whether, the author was not Paul but a disciple, there is no suggestion that the writer's own solutions are the only possible ones.

Volume was promptly received, well-protected by packaging, and a joy to read and use. This is simply one of the Best commentaries on Ephesians!

It's alright. Best seems to suggest explicitly rejecting the concept of supernatural personal evil beings, exploring how such an idea should be re-interpreted and affirmed as social forces (like poverty, etc.). That, and some other weird ideas, make me hesitant to accept what Best has to say, but it is still a profitable read.

Also, now I can say that I have the Best commentary on Ephesians.

I'm not reviewing the contents of this book, only the physical condition. There are blank spots on pages 24 and 29 of the paperback edition. There is also a slight ink stain on page 398. I checked another copy of this same book (ICC Ephesians paperback) and found those defects on the same exact pages. I suspect that the masterfilm was defected. The hardcover edition that I loaned from a library did not have those defects (It was a beautiful book to hold and read). I also have bought other ICC paperbacks (all three vols of Matt. and also the Pastoral Epistles) and I don't find any defects in those volumes. On the whole, I think the quality of the paperback editions of ICC Ephesians is sadly way too far below the quality of the writer of this otherwise excellent commentary (I'd gladly rate this book 5 stars, but for the reasons stated above). You should check your copy.

2.0 out of 5 stars A cut-down version of his real commentary

I guess I really should have known given the price, but this is "Ephesians commentary lite" By all accounts, Best is the definitive critical commentary of recent years (in English, at least) but there isn't enough of the substance in this version to tell.

I didn't really find it helpful. I should have stumped up for the real thing.
